Chanel Buckner Mr. Towns 11th Grade 5th Period Compare and Contrast Essay 20 October 2017 The Demand for Independence vs Death The revolutionary period was the age of reason. It was the period in time when civilians wanted to take control of their unalienable rights; â€Å"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness† (Jefferson). Both Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson took part in the revolutionary period. They were both leaders that took action to receive independence from Great Britain. The two revolutionary leaders are remarkably comparable and contrastable from each other. One huge difference between Henry and Jefferson is their difference as an individual person, views, and politics. Another difference is the difference between the†¦show more content†¦The purpose of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence was to abolish all allegiances to Great Britain and be set free from unfair taxes, tyrannical rule, and unfair treatment. The purpose of Henry s Virginia Convention Speech was to persuade the colonists to enter into war against Great Britain. Henry’s speech is more of a d emanding than the Declaration of Independence. His tone is aggressive because he wants to persuade the audience to agree with what he believes is right. Henry wants the crowd to agree with him when he says powerful and memorable quotes such as â€Å"Give me liberty or give me death!† (Henry 230) He wants to American people to wake up, stand and fight against the injustice of Great Britain. A technique that Henry used throughout his speech in order to get the crowd to be on his side of the argument is the use of repetition, hypophora, and rhetorical questions. A couple examples of when repetition was used is when Henry said, The war is inevitable--and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come. (Henry) and We must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! (Henry) Hypophora is the figure of speech in which a writer raises a question, and then immediately provides an answer to that question.
